Noir

Increasingly I find myself drawn to black and white images. So much so, that I have dedicated my new instagram page exclusively to monochrome work. You can take a look at my new Belle Noire Images here.

So why are we drawn to black and white photography?

They are timeless and they are classic.
Black and white photography has existed since the art form was invented which means that monochrome images cannot easily be dated. Rather than becoming distracted by colour, monochrome will focus the mind on the mood, tones, textures and lighting in the image. It creates an emotional connection and make us stop and think. It creates intensity.

So how does that work for the sort of images Belle Privé creates?

Noir Boudoir images, in addition to the timeless quality,  have an arty, high end feel which make great wall art. They also have a simplicity not found in colour images, showing sensuality and elegance. We see the world in colour so viewing an image in monochrome has more of an impact.

From classic vintage pinup to dark and moody bodyscapes, black and white is always a great choice.

9 Reasons to Book a Boudoir Photoshoot

A photoshoot is so much more than the sum of its parts. It's not just about the stunning images of yourself you'll be left with, there are benefits you had never even considered. It's all about loving and celebrating how incredible you really are. There are many reasons why women come to use for an empowering photoshoot. If you've been thinking about booking for while, or even if you had never considered it, read on...

Lydia-11Lydia-11

1. You are Celebrating a Milestone Birthday

Many of our clients are celebrating a milestone birthday, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60. (Fabulous at 50 is definitely the most popular age to celebrate). At any age though, what a great way to celebrate another trip around the sun!

Grace-86Grace-86

2. You are Getting Married or Divorced

Are you newly engaged? How about a gift they'll never forget (believe me!) The perfect gift for your husband (or wife) to be is a beautiful collection of boudoir images of the woman they love.

Alternatively, are you getting divorced? Rediscover your sexy and celebrate your beauty with an empowering photoshoot which will give you the confidence to start your new life.

Simone-223Simone-223

3. You had a Baby

It's easy to always put your child first which means forgetting who you really were before they came into your life. A photoshoot can help you rediscover yourself, not to mention the chance to be totally pampered by my makeup artist and the rare chance to unwind and just be you for a few hours. A few extra lbs? Don't worry... with my award winning lighting and posing guidance, you won't even notice. Eva-78Eva-78

4. You'll Never be as Young as you are Today

Each day we change, we age. A photoshoot is the perfect reminder of just how incredible you really are, right now, this moment. Don't wait until... (insert excuse).

6. It's Actually Fun

I haven’t met a client yet who hasn’t been nervous on arrival at the studio. A few minutes in though, they are laughing, chatting... it's a very relaxed, girly environment. I guide you through every pose but let me tell you, by the end of the shoot, you'll be posing like a pro on your own.

9. You Need a Break from the Daily Grind

Do you dream of doing something just for yourself? After this past year, we all deserve to be pampered, to relax a little. And we absolutely need more glamour in our lives. Sit back and relax whilst my professional hair and make up artist make you look your most glamorous ever. Then we'll begin the shoot and I'll guide you through every step. You'll relax into it and be left with images that will make you proud. Why not make a night of it and head out for dinner looking your most fabulous ever!

Women in Photography

c1b9469044a51df14992c41e6e7bbf76c1b9469044a51df14992c41e6e7bbf76

Since it’s invention in the 1800s, photography has historically been the domain of men. Adverts targeted male photographers assuming they had more technical knowledge and a greater ability. However in 1893, Kodak began using ‘Kodak Girl’ to market to women. Whilst the intention was there, the sentiment needed work with phrases like ‘even mum could use it’ being used in their marketing.

By 1900, women made up almost 20% of the profession at a time when it was unusual for women to even have a profession. Photographic studios marketed their business by offering “lady operators” to photograph women and families. Even to this day, female photographers dominate the child and family market.

So why, over 100 years later do women still only make up 20% of all professional photographers?

It didn’t take long before photography became the primary means to record conflict and current events. As equipment became lighter and developing became simpler, it was easier for photographers to work on location. Warzones and political rallies were not seen as the place for women. Even today, female photojournalists are hugely in the minority. women-that-changed-history-21women-that-changed-history-21

Some women fought tradition and were among the pioneer photojournalists. Gerda Taro (1910-1937), for example, worked alongside Robert Capa, photographing the Spanish Civil War. Taro was known for her intimate style of war photography, capturing the emotions of situations. Her photographs revealed the personal and physical stress soldiers experienced. She was killed in action in Spain in 1937, photographing at the front line.

Dorothea LangeDorothea Lange Another notable female photographer at this time was Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) who is well-known for her portraits of migrants during the Great Depression in US. Lange exposed a number of social problems over her career, but it was her emotive photographs taken in the 1930s that helped to change the public perception of poverty in the United States.

Diane Arbus (1923-1971) was another important female photographer who focussed on marginalised people such as transgender, circus performers, dwarves and giants. She worked for Vogue amongst other publications and has had a film made about her life.

Vivien MaierVivien Maier

Vivian Maier (1926-2009) has become one of the most famous (and prolific) street photographers in history. Her work was discovered after her death, hidden in suitcases, by a photographer who bought them at an auction. Since then,  her work has been exhibited across many countries

There is no greater female portrait photographer than Annie Leibovitz. Throughout her expansive career, she photographed high profile subjects such as Demi Moore (naked and pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair), The Queen and John Lennon on the same day as his death.

While more women are working in fashion and commercial photography, men still out number (and out earn) women. 92% of all adverts are shot by men. Female photojournalists and sports photographers are still rare. More female judges and female speakers at camera club level are needed which in turn would encourage more female membership at clubs.

Gone are the days of models in bikinis on the front of EVERY camera magazine. Publishers and manufacturers alike are embracing the female photographer. More stylish camera bags and straps are available, lighter cameras. Adverts are changing to show both male and female hands holding cameras (not just male hands). We have strong, successful female photographers to inspire and motivate: Annie Leibovitz, Sue Bryce, Lara Jade, Lyndsay Adler to name but a few.

The story of women in photography is still a work in progress but it's heading in the right direction....

Corset Photography

Are you an established designer who needs a portfolio update?

Are you just starting up as a corset designer?

Are you a design student who needs their work professionally documented?

Having worked extensively with corsets throughout my career, it is one of my favourite genres of lingerie to photograph. I understand just how much work goes into making a corset, not only the outward facing design but also the hidden engineering that goes into creating those incredible feminine curves. Therefore, I also understand that booking a full photoshoot can be costly when you only have a few garments to photograph. Let me help...

Corset Shoot Day

A corset shoot day is a more cost effective way to have your work photographed. It is open to all corset designers (in fact, all lingerie designers). These are held on specific dates throughout the year. Garments can be posted to me and they will be returned after the shoot by post. I will be working with one model throughout the day. Beforehand, we will discuss the exact vision you have from backdrop colour, lighting style (dark and dramatic or light and airy) to any specific poses or detail shots you require. (Please note, it will not be possible for the model to change hairstyle or nail colour throughout the day). After the shoot, you will receive a password protected proofing gallery from which to select your final images which will be edited to my usual high standards.

Get in touch to enquire

If you have multiple garments or shoot or have very specific ideas in mind, would like to work with a specific model or in a specific location, a full photoshoot may be the best option for you. Half day photoshoots are from £290 inclusive of images. You can find more information on my Brand Photography page.

The White Sheet Shoot https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2021/1/the-white-sheet-shoot

White Sheet Shoot

Timeless, classic and sexy.

Far and away, my most requested style of boudoir photoshoot, is the white sheet shoot.

Wear your lingerie underneath if you like but with a white sheet draped as suggestively as you dare. Let the imagination run riot... sometimes it's what you don't see that makes an image more suggestive. Remember the Marilyn Monroe white sheet images? Light and airy, and not overly styled, these casual yet elegant images work in both colour and monochrome. Perfect for every body shape and every age.

Secrets to Looking Good on a Video Call https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2021/1/secretstolookinggoodonavideocall

Secrets to Looking Good on a Video Call

Since sitting in front of a webcam is the new norm, I'm going to let you in on the secrets to looking your best on a video call, even if you are still in your PJs! It really can detract from what you are saying if viewers are more focussed on looking at the state of your living room behind... Yet it doesn't take much to show yourself in your best light on every call, whether it is a meeting with your boss, a virtual dinner party, a chat with Grandma or a 'quarantini' with friends.
74AA0D8E-56FD-4D75-A74F-8B4501E6180F 274AA0D8E-56FD-4D75-A74F-8B4501E6180F 2

Lighting is Everything

Lighting is key when it comes to knocking years off your age. It really can make a huge difference, brightening your skin and making your eyes sparkle. Your light source should be directly in front of you. Lighting behind you will turn you into a silhouette and won't show you at your professional best.

The easiest light is window light if you are video calling in the daytime. Place your desk directly in front of the window, not to the side, even if it means rearranging your furniture.

If this isn't possible or you are calling after dark, an artificial light source such as a ring light is great. (You can buy these quite cheaply on Amazon). These are daylight balanced lights on an adjustable stand. Place them directly in front of you with the light source slightly higher than chin level and adjust the brightness to give you the best effect. Your skin should look the colour of your actual skin so make sure it isn't too bright.

If you don't have a handy window or an artificial light source, at best stay away from lights directly above you as these cast the most unflattering shadows.

Position your Camera

Always make sure your camera is at eye level, if not a little higher. Cameras below eye level can give you a double chin and viewers will also see the contents of your nostrils which isn't ideal! Prop your laptop up on books if necessary or you can buy laptop stands online.

Prepare your Background

Before the call, turn your camera on and check your position. Check the light, the height of your camera and check for anything distracting behind you. If you are in front of a bookcase, check for any embarrassing books. Do you really want your boss to see the Karma Sutra on your shelf behind? Nosey viewers will always check out what is behind you! Move the basket of dirty washing or anything distracting in the background. You don't want a plant growing from your head. You want to present yourself in your best light, even if your house does look like someone has thrown a grenade in, fake it! If you want all the focus on you, then use a plain wall background behind.

EFP_9595 copyEFP_9595 copy

Styling

Make up on, hair done but what to wear? It is best to wear one colour and stay away from busy patterns which can detract from your face. Try to avoid colours the same colour as your background as you don't want to look like a floating head. Off the shoulder styles are not advised, ladies, unless you want to look like you are sitting naked! And remember, viewers only see your top half so by all means, keep your pyjama bottoms and slippers on...

Noise Distractions

Make sure all other noise distractions are turned off. Mute your phone, turn off the TV and radio, give the children something to entertain themselves, and move the dog to another room. Who wants to see the dog licking it's nether regions during an important video call (yep, been there!)

And lastly, remember to talk to the actual camera on your computer (not to your own beautiful image)
to connect with your viewers.

I'd love to hear any video call fails (we've all been there!) Leave a comment below to make us smile....

A Year in Review 2020 https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/12/a-year-in-review-2020

A Year in Review 2020

Well, 2020, what can I say.... you didn't quite turn out as planned!

This year was supposed to be my best yet. At the beginning of the year, all my ducks were in a row. Fast forward a few months and I didn't even know where my ducks were. It's been tough, I won't lie.

This year has been all kinds of wrong.

Difficult times for everyone.

1a1a

But let's look at the positives...

I spent the first lockdown shooting look books for lingerie brand Playful Promises, photographing lingerie from my dining room table in between home schooling two little girls. In fact, I found my daughter in her bedroom with white paper on her table, a lamp over it and her knickers laid out. I asked her what she was doing... 'Photographing my knickers Mummy, like you.' Eek! Moving swiftly on...

My greatest achievement, by far, this year has been being announced as a finalist in Image of the Year competition with this image of model, Blossom & Buttercups. It's the second year in a row I have received this accolade from the Guild of Photographers. From over 16,000 images, I have made it to the final 10 in the Portraiture category. (The winner is announced in 2021). To receive recognition like this, from a panel of international judges, really does make me proud!

On a professional level, I achieved my Q qualification with the Guild of Photographers, having submitted a panel of work for their assessment. Onwards now to Craftsman status...

I also managed to move to a larger studio mid lockdown. You can see more of the studio in my Studio Tour feature.

Confessions copyConfessions copy

My teaching skills have been in demand this year, with more 1-2-1s than I have ever done before. Webinars have also been a new thing for me this year. My first ever was for the Guild of Photographers entitled Confessions of a Boudoir Photographer and I was terrified! They then asked me back and I presented Portraits with Impact which I have also presented for various UK Camera Clubs and for the largest female photography group, Sheclicks.

Portraits with ImpactPortraits with Impact

Recently, I was honoured to be asked back by the Guild of Photographers as one of their panelists on their Creative Light event, alongside some of the leading photographers in the country, speaking about Child Photography (yes, my alter ego is family photography Emma Finch Photography).

As someone who has always turned down speaking engagements in the past, it has been a great exercise to push myself out of my comfort zone and get used to presenting to large groups.

On the publications front, I've had two articles in PhotoPlus, the Canon Magazine, three in Amateur Photographer, one in Digital Photographer and a spread in PinUp Kulture. It's always great to see your work in print but I'm now being asked increasingly to share my expertise and knowledge and I love that I can help others improve their photography too.

With more commercial work than ever before, I have been happy to have shot various lingerie brand campaigns which I hope to be doing a lot more of in 2021!

Here are my most popular images of 2020.

Emma Rose Bland, Penny Lick, Rachel Frances (x4!), Miss Pearl Curl, Millie Dollar, Miss Leigh's Boudoir.

Many thanks to those who have worked with me, booked me, supported me and encouraged me this year.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas

Here's hoping that 2021 turns itself around & we have a Spectacular Year !

After a rather difficult 2020, I was stunned to be announced as one of the finalists in the Image of the Year competition with this provocative image of model Blossom & Buttercups. The image was taken against the brick wall of the studio car park, using a Pixapro Pika200 light in a 47" octobox feathered to her left. I've always loved the fierce look in her eyes and the edgy feel to the portrait.

It has recently been announced that from all the entries across the year, the Guild’s Judges have selected just 10 images in various genres to go forward to the annual Image of the Year Final. Those selected really are the best of the best, and an image by Emma is one of those selected as a Finalist in the Portraiture genre!

Guild Director Lesley Thirsk said “One of the Guild’s aims is to drive standards and creativity amongst photographers. Our competition certainly does that, for the standard of the entries we see each month is quite staggering. To have an image recognised by the Guild in the monthly competition is difficult enough, so to have an image selected as being one of the best in a category for the end of year Final is without doubt an incredible achievement, and shows just how talented photographer, Emma is.”

In December, highly regarded Judges gathered together from across the country to choose the overall winner.

The results will be announced in early February 2021

Eek, do I have to get naked? https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/10/eek-do-i-have-to-get-naked

Eek, do I have to get naked?

Booking a Boudoir Photoshoot can be terrifying. I know, I've been there... on the wrong side of the camera!

You are caught up in wanting some beautiful images but then worrying what you'll look like, whether people will notice your less than perfect ----- (insert body part).

Let me explain two things:

Firstly, most women are far too critical of themselves. Remember that image of you from years ago when at the time you felt self conscious and now you are thinking 'Wow, I looked great!' You just didn't realise it at the time. The same is true of RIGHT NOW. You look incredible, you just don't realise it. Or you refuse to believe it.

Either way, I want to show you the beauty that others see in you.

Secondly, I have years of experience in posing and lighting different bodies and I promise, you WILL look incredible.

That said, even those with the most spectacular bodies on the planet can feel a little intimated when standing in their lingerie in a studio in front of a photographer. So... what to wear when you just want to be just a little more covered? There is no law that all boudoir images must be in lingerie. Leave something to the imagination.

Here are a few alternative ideas...

Rachel 2020-128 copyRachel 2020-128 copy

A robe - sheer, lace, long or short. You can be as covered (or not) as you like. Worn as it should be or draped off a shoulder. The suggestion is still there...

Sam-142bwSam-142bw

A white shirt - forever sophisticated yet seductive. Mostly covered up but effortlessly sexy. Extra points if the shirt belongs to your partner.

6Z4A8306 copy6Z4A8306 copy

A blazer (or leather or fur jacket) - there's nothing sexier than a strong woman and a jacket over lingerie is not only an elegant option but shows you are the strong woman you are.

A dress - who says sexy only exists in lingerie? Bring your favourite dress. Sometimes it's what you don't see....

Baby Daisy-22Baby Daisy-22

The white sheet - one of my most popular shoots. Wear your lingerie underneath but with a white sheet draped as suggestively as you dare. Feel covered up but it's eternally sexy. Remember Marilyn Monroe?

6Z4A7020 copy 2 copy6Z4A7020 copy 2 copy

A man's hat - another popular one in my studio. A beautifully lit portrait in a man's hat coupled with fabulous hair and make up by my professional make up team. And even better, this one is social media friendly so even your dad/neighbour/work colleague can see this one!

Sadie-48Sadie-48 A slouchy jumper - cute yet sexy.

So the answer is... No, you don't have to get naked.

(But you can if you choose to!)

Lingerie Care https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/9/lingerie-care

Lingerie Care

If like me, you love your lingerie, how do you care for it? Whilst your day to day cotton basics can be thrown in the washing machine, how do you really look after your more delicate pieces? Beautiful lingerie can be an investment of hundreds of pounds so we want it to last as long as possible...

There's a lot to consider with today's lingerie...lace, embroidery, buckles.... Here is the lingerie lowdown.

Washing

Yes, we all hate hand washing but needs must with your more delicate satin and lace lingerie!

Fill a basin with warm water and add a teaspoon of detergent, ideally a lingerie wash such as The Laundress, to help protect the lycra

Of course, always separate your darks from your lights.

Pre treat any stains with the same detergent

Gently wash your garments by massaging

Rinse in fresh, lukewarm water. Do not wring!

Lay your items flat to dry away from direct sunlight.

Cotton can be washed in the washing machine at 30C, but using a lingerie bag can help to prevent problems with the under wiring.

Always hook the back of your bra together to prevent it from catching on something else in the washing machine

If you have to tumble dry, use a low setting. The tumble dryer can misshape your garments.

Storing

Non moulded cups can be folded in half and stored in a drawer.

Moulded cups are best hung in a wardrobe to prevent denting

Even better, keep each lingerie set together in a box or satin bag

Don't leave your most beautiful lingerie in storage though, book a photoshoot and let's showcase you looking your absolute best!

How to choose a Boudoir Photographer https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/7/how-to-choose-a-boudoir-photographer

How to choose a Boudoir Photographer

It's not an everyday occurrence that you will be posing in your lingerie in front of a complete stranger... it can be both thrilling and scary, and so it's important to do your research. You need to make sure that you are working with professionals who know exactly what they are doing. Here are my top tips for what to consider:

Lingerie Photographer based in Manchester UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 12Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

1. Really look at their work. Look at the posing - is it flattering to the woman? Look at the lighting - does it look professional or amateur? Look at the editing - does it look to magazine quality or more straight out of camera? Do you prefer a natural professional retouch or do you want a total face and body reshape!? Look at their style of photography. Are you looking for timeless, sensual and classic or more of a glamour shoot? You need to be drawn to their style of images.

Simone-115cropSimone-115crop

2. Choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable. Don't forget you will be posing semi-naked in front of this person and you need someone who can easily put you at ease. 'Deer in the headlights' is not the sexiest look! How will you know that though if you haven't met the photographer yet? Read their bio, read their blogs and check out client testimonials. Do clients mention the photographer putting them at ease? Do you prefer a male or female photographer? It can make a huge difference to how you feel during the shoot.

Melissa-105Melissa-105

3. Does this photographer specialise in Boudoir? How accomplished are they? Experience is an important factor when choosing your photographer.  Every session I do is fully bespoke and tailored to the individual. You need someone who can pose different body shapes, who is proficient with lighting and retouching. Someone who is a sensualist and beyond passionate about their job.

4. Choose a professional, and by that, I mean a brand who responds promptly to your message. Someone who has plenty of advice and information on the website. Someone with a studio who is set up properly to deal specifically with boudoir shoots. Belle Privé Studio is a private, boutique studio in central Manchester set up exclusively for Boudoir with all the furniture, backdrops and sets needed to cater to this genre. Need spare stockings? Got them. Safety pins or red nail polish? Got it. Need well earned snacks for after your shoot? Of course you do... posing can be physical!

5. Are you concerned about privacy? I understand many women have careers or community commitments that prevent them from even discussing their boudoir shoot publicly. Check what will happen to the images after the session. You can read more about my policy here.

Luxury Photoshots for Women UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 69Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

You may notice that I haven't mentioned price. Boudoir is an area where it may not be the best option to go for the cheapest photographer. You want to be proud of your images for the rest of your life. You need someone skilled enough to make you look your absolute best, whilst still looking like you! Many high street studios will offer cut price boudoir shoots (along with their pet portraits, family portraits, product shoots etc). Whilst the thought of an incredibly cheap shoot may be tempting, don't forget that these studios will often be less experienced in this genre. Boudoir showcases your beauty and is a huge confidence boost. Badly handled and it could have quite the opposite affect. There will often also be a high-pressure sales pitch at the end to get you to buy images that you perhaps can't afford. After all these studios have to make money somehow! Make sure your photographer's prices are clear and honest.

Millie-125Millie-125

Booking a boudoir photography session can be a life changing experience for many women. Alternatively, it may just be a decadent treat for yourself. Either way, choose wisely and you know where I am if you need me....

I am so excited to have won a further 5 national awards for my work.

The Guild of Photographers is a highly regarded national photographic body and its members are dedicated to enhancing their skills in the art, craft and profession of photography.

Delighted that Emma has achieved this Award. The Guild has very demanding standards when judging photographic competitions. In fact, the judging is undertaken by a panel of internationally recognised experts from a variety of photographic backgrounds, so it is an achievement to be, quite rightly, proud of! Emma has now achieved 20 National Awards.

Privacy Matters

Are you interested in booking a Boudoir Photoshoot but concerned about your privacy? I understand many women have careers or community commitments that prevent them from even discussing their boudoir shoot publicly so read on for Belle Privé's privacy policies.

Lingerie Photographer based in Manchester UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 36Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

Privé Studio

I am a female photographer, and my stylist is also a woman. During the actual photoshoot, after the makeover, there is only ever you and I in the studio. A robe is available at all times should you wish to feel more covered.

Online Protection

All retouching is done by me, so no one else will see your images. Your proofing gallery is password protected too so only you have access to your images. Images are backed up in two different location after the shoot. I do however keep all past images as many clients come back to order more images at a later date. I am definitely NOT a high pressure sales studio where you will be told that images will be deleted in 24 hours if you don't buy them!!!

For Your Eyes Only?

I love your images as much as you do but I would never share any client images without your express permission. I respect your privacy and will only share images if you wish. After the photoshoot, you will be sent a link to a private area of the website where you can (if you wish) sign a model release form for any images that you would like to be shared. At that point, you can advise which image(s) you would like me to share, and also how you would like to be addressed in the post, such as, tagging your actual instagram account to 'Client Clare' to a completely anonymous post where I don't mention your name at all. And if you prefer to keep your images for your eyes only, that is perfectly fine too!

Display Yourself!

What do you do if you want to display your images at home but don't want your mum seeing them when she comes round?? A Belle Privé folio box is the perfect solution - up to 10 of your images, perfectly printed and beautifully mounted ready for display and all presented in a discreet black box. Folio boxes can be added on to the Bombshell & Hollywood packages.

Alternatively, during the shoot, just let me know that you would like some 'anonymous' images and I will shoot sensual, body centric images with your face more obscured. No one need ever know it is you!

Do you Pinterest?

Hi, my name is Emma and I have a serious Pinterest obsession!

I create mood boards for almost all my shoots and I encourage you to do the same....

Belle Prive Photography Pinterest Moodboard BlogBelle Prive Photography Pinterest Moodboard BlogBelle Prive Photography Pinterest Moodboard Blog

So what is a mood board?

A mood board is a collection of images, collated together, to set the tone of a shoot, to be used as inspiration. It doesn't mean that you are going to totally replicate the image, it just means that there is something in the image that excites you, be it the styling, the lighting, the pose, the mood etc.

Why are mood boards helpful?

Every shoot I do is fully bespoke to you, I have no 'one size fits all' approach here. I aim to create images tailored to you, that you will love for years to come. A mood board helps all those involved in the photoshoot stay on the same page. It sets the tone of the shoot. It's a visual plan. I encourage clients to create mood boards before the shoot, or at the least to let me know which of my images you are drawn to (you can pin directly from my website). This helps me understand if you prefer light/airy or dark/sultry, it also helps me understand if you prefer a more candid natural style or a more posed studio look. If you have a specific look in mind for hair and make up, a mood board can also help my make up artist visualise your preferred look.

How do I create a mood board?

By far the easiest way to create a mood board is on Pinterest. It's a great resource of inspiration and ideas. You can download the app to your phone or do it on the desktop. Don't forget you can pin images you find on the general internet onto your board too, not just those found on Pinterest. Then feel free to share it with me! (You can read all about Pinterest here.) Preparation is key to a successful photoshoot!

What happens on a Boudoir PhotoShoot?

Belle Prive Photography Boudoir PhotoshootBelle Prive Photography Boudoir PhotoshootBelle Prive Photography Boudoir Photoshoot

What happens on a shoot, doesn't stay on the shoot as I'm about to tell you exactly what to expect on the day.

My goal is not only to make you look incredible but to make you feel completely at ease during your photoshoot. Preparation is the key, as well as knowing what to expect.

Before the photoshoot itself, on booking, you will receive my Guide on what to bring and how to prepare, along with a checklist for the night before. You'll have access to a private area of the website where there is a font of advice and articles to have a read through. We'll also discuss how you want to be photographed including the styles you like.

On arrival at the studio, we'll have a chat about the session and take a look at what outfits you have brought with you. Next you'll will be pampered and preened by my professional make up artist whilst I prepare the studio for our shoot. The studio is warm and comfortable at all times and looks more like a (small!) New York loft apartment than a photography studio (look out for a Studio Tour Blog coming soon). Makeover Photoshoot by Belle Prive UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 26Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

There is only ever you and I in the studio during the photoshoot itself and I will guide you through every pose to showcase your best bits and minimise any areas which aren't your favourite. Everyone comments on how relaxed the shoot is so even if you've never stepped foot in front of a camera before, your nerves will soon disappear and you'll ease into the shoot. We will even put on your favourite music too. You'll have time for outfit changes as well. After the shoot, still looking fabulous, why not make a night of it and hit the town?

Within 48 hours, you will receive a password protected online proofing gallery from which to choose your favourites - this is always the most difficult part for my clients! Your chosen images will then be edited to my usual high standard and sent over to you digitally within two weeks.

Want to make a booking? Get in touch!

Manchester Travel Guide https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/4/manchester

Manchester: Stay, Eat,Visit

With so many of my clients travelling to shoot with me, I am constantly asked for hotel and restaurant recommendations. Why not make a night of it? A previous industrial city which thrived on the cotton industry (Belle Privé Studio is based at a Grade II listed former Cotton Mill) Manchester is now a world player in terms of restaurants, shopping and nightlife. A thriving cosmopolitan city which really has it all*, from some of the UK's finest art galleries and museums to historic buildings, great shopping, nightlife and of course football.

*Apologies for the weather!

IMG_2616IMG_2616

Here are my top picks if you are planning a night or two in the city.

Hotels

  • The closest hotel to the studio is the Ibis Pollard Street which is about a third of a mile away from the studio itself. It is a comfortable 2* hotel who often have special offers.

  • Just over half a mile from the studio and in the heart of Manchester's famous Northern Quarter, is the very stylish Cow Hollow Hotel.

  • For a little luxury, why not make a night of it at one of Manchester's best hotels, Hotel Gotham, The Lowry or Stock Hotel. All are 5* hotels and within about a mile of the studio.

There is definitely no shortage of hotels and accommodation. For more, take a look at:

www.booking.com

(The postcode of the studio is M4 7JA).

Restaurants

Manchester is one of the UK's gastronomic capitals with some fine restaurants, including it's very own Michelin starred restaurant half a mile from the studio!

  • Mana - Michelin starred restaurant offering incredibly inventive food. Perfect for a special occasion.

  • The French - Manchester's long standing award winning restaurant offering fine dining in sumptuous setting.

  • Tattu - extravagant, oriental restaurant

From a huge Chinatown, to the Curry Mile, Vietnamese, Mexican, British, Celebrity Hangouts and small independent coffee shops, Manchester has every cuisine you can think of. You can find more information here:

Smart Phone Photography Tips https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/4/smart-phone-photography-tips

Smart Phone Photography Tips

In these modern times, with phone technology improving all the time, you don't have to be a pro to get some very good results with just your phone. Here are my top tips on getting the most from your camera phone:

Clean your lens

Your phone is usually always with you, in your pocket or your bag. All the while, the camera lens is collecting dust and smears. Make sure you clean your lens from time to time with a lens cloth to stop you from getting milky images. You want your images to be as clear as possible.

6Z4A60416Z4A6041

Focus

  • Today's phone cameras are pretty good at focussing but not every photo you take has an obvious subject. To adjust where you want your camera lens to focus, tap the screen where you want to sharpen the view.
  • Try not to zoom in too far as it can make your images grainy.
  • Hold the phone as steady as you can, especially in lower light situations as this will really improve the sharpness of your image.
  • Some phone cameras now have a 'Portrait' mode to create depth of field or blur behind your subject and this can really make your subject pop. If your phone doesn't have this function, there are apps that can do it for you such as Focos App.

DSC06109 copyDSC06109 copy

Composition

One of the easiest ways improve your mobile photos is to turn on the camera's gridlines. This will superimpose a grid on the screen of your camera that is based on the Rule of Thirds. Try placing your points of interest on one of the thirds to enhance your composition and give balance to your image. Don't be afraid of negative space which refers to empty space, for example, sky, open water, a wall, an expanse of grass etc.

On an Iphone - Go to Settings, Camera, then switch on Grid

On a Samsung - in Camera, go to Settings, switch on Grid Lines

A Different Angle  Experiment with taking photos from unusual angles. Think outside the box. Get low and shoot up, go high and shoot down, play around with angles to make your images more memorable. If you are shooting people or animals though, eye level is the best place to shoot so if you would like a portrait of your dog, get down to their level.

13490794_10154424437383968_730295973937504568_o (1)13490794_10154424437383968_730295973937504568_o (1)

Leading lines  Good photos often have a 'line' that draws the viewer's eye towards the focal point of the image. Examples of leading lines are staircases, roads, branches etc

Reflections and Shadows  There are lots of ways to experiment with reflections - water, sunglasses, metallic surfaces. On a bright sunny day, look for interesting shadows and silhouettes.

Patterns and Texture  Repetitive patterns can make great images. Patterns can be found in geometric shapes, architecture, tiled floors. Look out for patterns all around you. Don't overlook the small stuff either - Detailed shots of texture such as rust, peeling paint, tree bark can also make great images.

Symmetry and Balance  An image that contains symmetry can make a very successful image. It is also a simple way to compose an image- make sure your image feels balanced and not too heavy on one side.

Light

Critical to all photography - good light! The best camera phone images are taken with natural light and most camera phones cope very well with most lighting situations without having to add in artificial light. You can always tweak your image a little when you edit it. Tapping where you want to focus will usually correct the exposure in camera.

14918793_10154867652483968_1323968961268368970_o14918793_10154867652483968_1323968961268368970_o

If you are shooting outdoors, then try and shoot either first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon. Avoid the midday sun if you possibly can as it is too harsh and creates shadows you just don't need. Cloudy days are the best for outdoor portrait photography so you don't have your subject either squinting into the sun or silhouetted. The best light in the entire day can be found at Golden Hour, the hour before sunset when the light is soft and golden.

39082174_10157071721848968_1012496732820340736_n39082174_10157071721848968_1012496732820340736_n

Go easy with the flash- it can make your images look very artificial indeed, especially at night. In a well lit scene, a flash can sometimes lift the shadows a little but be careful with any shadows it creates behind your subject.

Editing

Most phones these days have built in editing software. If you don't want to use these, there are plenty of apps around that will help such as Snapseed or Photoshop Fix, all of which are downloadable to your phone. If you aren't a pro at editing, minor adjustments can really improve an image. Perhaps a slightly different crop - get rid of anything distracting at the sides of the image and straighten the whole thing if it is wonky. Lifting the shadows slightly or increasing exposure can also help. Take a look at your white balance too- make sure your images aren't too yellow (if you are shooting with artificial light indoors) or too blue. Go easy with filters - any filter used should enhance your image and not dominate it. Most filters are adjustable so I'd definitely stay within the 10-50% range if you choose to use them.

Challenge

Concentrating on photography can really help you focus on the world around you, the beauty in the everyday that usually you wouldn't notice. You'll start to see things differently, I promise, if you just look. It's the perfect way to practice mindfulness!

Here are a few challenges you can try yourself either at home or whilst you are out and about:

A-Z

Photograph something beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

Colours

Photograph only things of a certain colour eg red.

Words/Letters

Photograph words you find and see if you can make a sentence. Or photograph letters and try and spell out your name.

Reflections/Shadows

See how many interesting reflections or shadows you can find.

Macro

Photograph the small stuff - insects, flowers, interesting patterns in sand etc.

Textures

How many interesting textures can you find? Think about bark, peeling paint, rust etc

Framing

Look at ways to improve your images by framing your subject and drawing your viewers eyes to your focal point - think about leading lines eg branches of trees etc

Unusual Selfies

Experiment with all the ways you can take a selfie and no, I don't mean with a selfie stick! Think about reflections, silhouettes, shadows on the floor etc

Better Blog Photos

So most of the world is on lockdown so what do you do if you still need social media and website content....?

We live in a visual world and we need quality images to make our brand stand out. Of course, hiring a pro photographer is the best option but what if you can't? The better your images, the more professional you will look to your clients.

Here are my top tips for taking your own photos, no matter what level you are at or whether you are shooting with the most expensive DSLR and tripod or your mobile phone and selfie stick. Take more images than you need and practice, practice, practice!

Light Lydia-11Lydia-11

Critical to all photography - good light!

If you are shooting outdoors, then try and shoot either first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon. Avoid the midday sun if you possibly can as it is too harsh, incredibly unflattering and creates shadows you just don't need. If you have to shoot in the midday sun, then find the shade. Cloudy days are the best for outdoor portrait photography. The best light in the entire day can be found at Golden Hour, the hour before sunset when the light is soft and golden. Make sure you are facing the sun so your face is evenly lit.

If you are shooting indoors, here's a secret... the most flattering light ever? Window light! Stand directly in front of your window for the most natural, flattering and even light. Wrinkles (if you have any) are diminished. If your window receives full sun, either wait until the light is softer or pull a net over to modify the light.

If you want to invest in some actual lighting, then try either a continuous led light or even a speed light with some triggers if you are a more competant photographer but make sure your light is modified. Bare light will be unflattering and give shadows behind you that look amateur-ish. My modifier of choice is an octobox - the bigger the better for a softer light and they don't have to cost much (you can buy them from Amazon).

Avoid standing directly under a ceiling light, which can cast weird shadows on your face.

Composition Lady Eccentrik-181 copyLady Eccentrik-181 copy

How do you compose an image? Firstly make sure there is nothing sprouting from behind your head - lamps, plants etc. Also make sure there is nothing distracting in the image - anything bright or shiny or anything with words on will usually detract attention away from your good self. And let's face it, it's all about you! A neutral background usually works well but of course it all depends on what look you are going for. Look for interesting textures and colours that compliment what you are wearing. Try and tie in your brand colours. Play around with different angles, different crops for variation.

The rule of thirds is an important rule of composition. This means having important aspects of the image placed on the third - for example, your eyes or even yourself with a little negative space to your side.

Posing Lydia-51Lydia-51

Knowing how to pose can make you camera ready at a moment's notice.

Think posture, shoulders back, twist your torso so that one shoulder is turned away from the camera. This celeb favourite is instantly slimming.

• Don’t press your arms into your body. Keep them a little way from your body and they will look much slimmer.

• If you are sitting, cross your legs.

• As a general rule of thumb, remember that things that are closest to the camera look bigger and those that are further away look smaller.

• Think about what to do with your hands- where you touch tends to be where people look. If at a complete loss, hold something!

• A natural smile trumps a fake one every time. The key to a natural expression is to think happy thoughts! Real thoughts of happiness make for a genuine, relaxed smile (rather than an otherwise forced facial expression). Remember to smile with your eyes too.

• Know your angle. Most people don't have perfectly symmetrical faces. Work out your best angle. Facing the camera straight on is rarely flattering. Instead, turn your head to a three-quarter position to give your features depth.

• To avoid a double chin, move your chin forward a little and down. Or press your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

• If you tend to always blink in photos, keep your eyes closed and open them slowly just before the picture is taken.

• To get sparkly eyes, look towards a light source just before the image is taken. This will also help to eliminate red eye.

• A photo shot from just above you is way more flattering than one shot from below and will minimise any double chin.

•  If you know you are going to be photographed, add a touch more make-up than usual. Emphasize your favourite feature. Don’t forget your nails as they are often in shot.

• Make sure your foundation is a perfect match to your skin. Go easy with any sparkle or shimmer. (Flash photography especially can be a little harsh and any sparkle can reflect back to the camera making you look a little ghostly)

Editing

Lightroom and Photoshop are the professional's choice of software but there are also so many sophisticated editing apps around to tweak your images. Snapseed is a favourite of many and can be downloaded to your phone or tablet. If you aren't a pro at editing, minor adjustments can really improve an image. Perhaps a slightly different crop - get rid of anything distracting at the sides of the image and straighten the whole thing if it is wonky. Lifting the shadows slightly or increasing exposure can also help. I would never recommend increasing saturation as it will only serve to unflatter. Take a look at your white balance too- make sure your images aren't too yellow (if you are shooting with artificial light indoors) or too blue. Make sure your skin is an accurate representation of your actual skin- that is the best way to check your colour balance is correct.

Boudoir Photography & Feminism https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/3/international-womens-day

Boudoir Photography & Feminism

A Feminist Boudoir Photographer, is that a contradiction in terms?

Since it is International Women's Day on 8th March, I thought I might discuss this contentious subject. Some see boudoir photography as the epitome of female liberation whilst others see it as demeaning. So which is correct?

Sam-249v2bwSam-249v2bw

The early beginnings of boudoir photography were in the 1920s when (male) photographers decided to celebrate the beauty of the female form. Illegal at the time, these images were considered scandalous. This lead on to the era of the PinUps and Playboy, all of which were for the benefit of men. (You can read more about the History of Boudoir here).

Lily-93Lily-93

So why would a woman, in this day and age, actually choose to be photographed semi naked?

Feminism, by definition, is having the same rights as men. This also means equal rights to sexual expression. Over the course of the century, the popularity of Boudoir Photography has grown and grown to the point where virtually every woman I know has had a boudoir shoot at some point in their lives. It has become a symbol of women's sexual freedom, of body acceptance at every level and of female empowerment. Creating artwork of your body is something to be proud of and celebrated.

Rosie Red-35smiley copyRosie Red-35smiley copy

Not all boudoir work is equal though. I do consider myself a feminist and so my brand attracts strong, independent women. My images show women in control of their bodies (and their lives). It is my personal choice not to depict women in positions of weakness, for example tidied up with bondage ropes - I much prefer to show female strength. The traditional patriarchal fantasy does not interest me either...  you'll never find any of my clients bent over a vintage kitchen. It's 2020, not 1950 and I'm pretty sure no woman finds the thought of housework either sexy or appealing! I shoot and I work for women.

When I ran a recent survey in my Instagram stories asking how viewers would describe my work, I received words such as: affirming, empowering, sensual, classy... I am very proud to have a strong female following who 'get' my work.

Eva-22Eva-22

Boudoir is something I believe every woman should do at least once in their lives. Whilst the thought of it to some seems daunting, let me reassure you that it will be one of the most confidence boosting and liberating experiences of your life! Most women are reassured that as a female boudoir photographer I understand women, how they see themselves and their bodies and most importantly how they want to be photographed. My hallmark is elegance and sophistication. Pretty much every client I have ever had in the studio is shooting for themselves and let me tell you, the vast majority want the world to see how fabulous they look! Take a look. It’s not every day that we get to see ourselves through someone else’s eyes and to experience the beauty that others see in us. Let's stop wasting time and energy concentrating on our 'flaws' and instead focus on our assets! So whether boudoir is for you or not, the important thing is that all women, without being judged, have the right to beautiful images of themselves.

Ultimately, and this is important, I shoot images for women rather than images of women.

Happy International Women's Day to you all!

xx

Retouch Confessions https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2020/2/retouching

Retouch Confessions

Thinner, Smoother, Prettier? We've all seen images of the impossibly beautiful model. But what if that image is... literally... impossible? We've all seen/used the quick fix beauty apps on our phones. These days, you don't have to be on the front cover of Vogue to look perfect, you can do it from the comfort of your own living room. So why do we have to appear perfect at all times? Is it because we see female perfection portrayed by the media at all times? Luxury Photoshots for Women UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 61Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

In recent years, there has been a backlash from models and celebrities over excessively edited images. In fact some countries, such as France, are passing laws meaning that overly retouched images need to be labelled as such. Seeing the unattainable female beauty portrayed by the media can have a hugely detrimental effect on impressionable young women. So much so that there has now been a move away from excessive retouching with celebrities and brands preferring a more natural beauty. There has also been an international  movement towards normalizing the appearance of fashion models for the past few years which is great news for all women. So where does that leave photographers like Belle Privé?

People often ask my opinion on retouching....

Whilst I hate to perpetuate the 'impossible beauty' myth, I wouldn't have a business without some retouching but my policy is simple- I will make you look your absolute best through posing (it’s a precise science), great lighting and knowing the exact moment to press the shutter. I am a natural retoucher. I will remove anything during the editing stage that won’t be there next week (spots, bruises, marks, wrinkles in fabric etc). I don’t, however, completely reshape your face or body because let’s face it, you are beautiful just as you are! You need to be recognisable in your images, just a more polished version of you. People love YOU, not a digitally manufactured version of yourself. If you expect to leave my studio looking like a Barbie Doll, then I am not the photographer for you (unless of course you do already look like Barbie!) I do, however promise to make you look your absolute best.

So how do I make you look your absolute best?

Photography and Photoshoots by Manchester Boudoir Fashion Vintage Portrait Studio UKmuaPhotography by Belle Prive Photography Manchester UK

Make-Up

First we start with my hair and make up artists who are some of the best in the industry! My Make up artists have worked in TV and film and for big name brands. We talk through the look you want and you sit back and get pampered before we begin the photoshoot.

Then, there's Posing... Sam-142bw copySam-142bw copy

There’s so much more to posing than you think... Professional models have to think about everything from the arch of their foot to their finger position, facial expression and everything in between! Don’t worry though if your posing repertoire needs work... I will guide you through every pose! Every body is different and so every pose should be different. There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach here. I have a wealth of experience in posing different body shapes and believe me I can create curves where there were none, minimise your less favourite bits and make your legs look longer than you thought possible. And I don’t mean photoshop... it’s all about posing, angles and great lighting!

There's also great Lighting...

737D388D-CC30-45B3-AB69-553535348CEA737D388D-CC30-45B3-AB69-553535348CEA

I'm OCD about lighting. Seriously, I have a very exacting eye and I know how to light a woman... to accentuate favourite bits, minimise less favourite bits and make everyone look fresher, younger and generally more sparkly! I teach studio lighting for Photography Session Days so you can be sure I know what I am doing in this department.

So whilst I do edit images, you will still look like you. In fact, you get to see all your unedited images during the proofing process so you get to see first hand how incredible you look before I've gone anywhere near it with Photoshop! Even at this stage, I get so many comments from clients saying that they can't believe that it is actually them in the images. So... when are you booking your shoot?

Image of the Year Finalist

Joker-121Joker-121

I was beyond honoured recently to be a Finalist in the Image of the Year with the Guild of Photographers which is a fiercely contested competition with some of the best photographers in the country competing. Guild standards are VERY high! I was in the final 10 nationally in my category of Contemporary Portraiture. It was a huge shock to be nominated, especially because the chosen image was a genre I had never shot before, Cosplay! I'm very proud of this image of The Joker though, modelled by G Brodie. The awards evening was held last weekend at a Jacobean Mansion in Cheshire and was a lavish black tie affair attended by photographers from all over UK.

You can find the Guild Press Release below.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE GUILD

Photographer Emma Finch achieves international acclaim!

Emma Finch, a photographer based in Manchester has reached the Final of the fiercely contested Guild of Photographers Image of the Year Competition. The Guild is a highly respected UK based association for photographers which has members from overseas as well. Each year it runs a monthly photographic competition, judged by internationally respected judges with awards given to the best entries. During 2019, the competition attracted over 13,500 entries from the most talented of photographers. It has recently been announced that from all the entries across the year, the Guild’s Judges have selected JUST 10 images in various genres to go forward to the annual Image of the Year Final. Those selected really are the best of the best, and an image by Emma is one of those selected as a Finalist!

Here's a sneak peek behind the glamour to show you how we create images....

Model Ruby Lorcan with Hanna Gill MUAModel Ruby Lorcan with Hanna Gill MUAModel Ruby Lorcan with Hanna Gill MUA

The story begins on a misty September morning... Beautiful pro model Ruby Lorcan had travelled up from London for our shoot. An early call time began with hair and make up courtesy of Hannah Gill MUA. Once Ruby had been beautified by Hannah, we headed to our location of a woodland area near Alderley Edge in Cheshire.

The mist was beautiful and low lying but unfortunately short-lived. We met up with our fabulous assistants- 10 photography students from the nearby Alderley Edge School for Girls. We would be using a parachute dress designed by Daisy Cutter so we needed assistance to waft the dress to give it movement and drama! What a great job they did.... Here are some behind the scenes images alongside the actual final images to show you what was involved on the day.

The Oxford Conference of Corsetry

I was delighted to be asked to be one of the official photographers at this year's Oxford Conference of Corsetry.

The Oxford Conference of Corsetry is the world's only conference for Corset Makers by Corset Maskers, all held in the stunning grounds of Jesus College, Oxford. Designers fly in from literally all over the world for this prestigious conference. It was held across the August bank holiday weekend and is an opportunity for corsetières to learn, network, share and develop skills, and includes workshops, talks and of course photoshoots!

I have worked with many corset makers over the years - the glamour, Gina Pisut Corsetiere with Marie Devilreaux Model at Oxford Conference of CorsetryGina Pisut Corsetiere with Marie Devilreaux Model at Oxford Conference of CorsetryGina Pisut Corsetiere with Marie Devilreaux Model at Oxford Conference of Corsetry shape and style fitting the Belle Privé aesthetic perfectly. I've been a life long lingerie lover and so it was an absolute joy to work with some of the world's finest corsetiéres and corset models. Despite it being the hottest day of the year, and a VERY busy shoot schedule, I loved every shoot. The designs were all so unique and the location of Jesus College, with it's historic library, the chapel, panelled dark wood walls and rose gardens- was a dream location for a photographer!

Here are a few sneak peeks of the shoots I did. If you are interested in booking your own commercial shoot, either in the studio or on location, do get in touch!

Lingerie Guide https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2019/10/lingerie-guide

Lingerie Guide

Confidence is the ultimate accessory for a successful boudoir photo shoot. One of the keys to success is a wardrobe that not only makes you feel amazing but that flatters your body. Correct lingerie will go a long way in helping you to feel sexy and confident on the day. Here is my guide on what to bring to your Boudoir Photoshoot:

Eva Miss Leigh BoudoirEva Miss Leigh BoudoirEva Miss Leigh Boudoir Lingerie Sets

  • There's no better excuse than a boudoir photoshoot to do some lingerie shopping. It makes the experience more special and you'll want to feel WOW in your images.
  • Bring matching lingerie sets- bra and knickers.
  • Try not to bring rigid, padded bras as they can maintain their shape when you lie down, even if your breasts don't and so can look a little unflattering in images.
  • Solid colours work well and can be very slimming. Black is the classic but why not bring a selection- black for a sultry, sexy look then maybe a colour or a lighter look for more variety.
  • Think about the type of knicker you would like- a brazilian style or fuller knicker can make a derriere more rounded whilst very tiny g-strings can flatten it. The higher the cut, the longer your leg will look.
  • If you are conscious of your middle section, try to avoid baggy babydolls or cover-ups- this can serve to make you look bigger than you are.
  • A corset is a great way to add extra curves, cinch your waist and create an incredible hourglass figure. If you haven't worn one before, make sure you are correctly fitted and practice wearing it beforehand. And don't worry about lacing yourself into one, we can help with that!
  • Conscious of your upper arms... How about a sexy robe or lacy wrap?
  • A bodysuit makes a great modern lingerie alternative

Makeover Photoshoot by Belle Prive UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 26Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio Stockings or Hold-Ups

  • Stockings or hold-ups can really finish off a lingerie look. Even if you don't usually wear them, try something different for your shoot.
  • Make sure your stockings or hold-ups aren't too short as that can shorten your legs.
  • Also make sure they aren't too tight or they can roll down or create lumps and bumps where you don't want.
  • If you are bringing stockings, don't forget the suspender belt to hold them up.
  • Fishnet tights can be very slimming.

Heels

  • A pair of very high heels is a must. They not only elongate your legs but improve your posture too during the shoot.
  • Ankle straps can shorten the leg so if possible, try to avoid them.
  • Even if you can't walk in the heels, it doesn't matter as long as they look good!

Accessories

  • Don't forget to pack any jewellery or accessories that you wish to use- oversized earrings or necklaces can work really well and add extra glamour.

Non Lingerie Blossom and ButtercupsBlossom and ButtercupsBlossom and Buttercups

  • You don't need to be in lingerie for your boudoir shoot. A glamorous dress can be just as sexy.
  • Or how about a man's shirt- there's nothing sexier! You can feel more covered up whilst still showing a little skin.
  • My most popular style is the implied nude- a white sheet covers as much as you like whilst the rest is left to the imagination!
  • A jacket or leather jacket can look great with lingerie.

Feel free to get in touch to ask any questions before your shoot or if you need more advice. Or take a look on Pinterest or at my portfolio for inspiration.

How to Prepare for a Boudoir Photoshoot

Eva Miss Leighs BoudoirEva Miss Leighs BoudoirEva Miss Leighs Boudoir If you are investing time and money into a Boudoir Photoshoot, you want to do this right! Preparation is key to a successful shoot. Here are my top tips on how to prepare for your Boudoir Photoshoot.

A Few Weeks Before....

  • Spend time deciding which lingerie to bring and trying on outfits. Look at yourself from all angles in a mirror. You need to feel confident and sexy in your chosen looks. If there is nothing in your wardrobe that makes you go WOW, go lingerie shopping. Your Boudoir shoot is the perfect excuse! You need to love what you are wearing.
  • Book your hair, manicure, pedicure, eyebrow and waxing appointments for a few days before the shoot. Don't underestimate the finishing touches- nails can be seen in pretty much every image. Don't fake tan if you can help it, natural skin looks much better on camera.
  • Prepare a moodboard and fill in your Pre-Shoot Questionnaire to ensure your images will suit your individual style.

Lily PorcelaineLily PorcelaineLily Porcelaine

A Few Days Before

  • Drink plenty of water- this helps your skin glow. Try to avoid alcohol and salt as this can affect your skin too.
  • Exfoliate and Moisturise for glowing skin
  • Prepare a music playlist if you like- you are welcome to connect your phone to my music system.

The Day before

  • Pack your shoot bag. Bring more outfits than you think you will need, don't forget heels, spare stockings, accessories and jewellery. Bring a robe (if you prefer to wear your own rather than the studio robe) and slippers if you like for extra comfort between sets.
  • Remove all tags from your lingerie- these can be seen in images especially if your lingerie is sheer or lacy.
  • Make sure any outfits are ironed ready to wear.
  • Plan your route and know how to get to the studio
  • Wash your hair the night before so that any style is more likely to hold the next day
  • Get an early night

On the Day Classy bespoke Boudoir for womenBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 55Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

  • Arrive at the studio with no make up on ideally
  • Don't wear anything that will leave marks on your skin, for example, socks, tight trousers, bobbles on your wrist etc
  • Please eat a little something before your shoot- photoshoots can be quite physical and you'll need your strength and energy.
  • RELAX and trust my make up artist to take you to the exact level of glam you desire.

An Interview with

Burlesque Star Cherie Bebe

Cherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performer

Here at Belle Privé, we've long been a lover of Burlesque and there's no performer more lovely or beautiful than Cherie Bebé. I first met Cherie a few years ago when I saw her perform and since then, we have worked together numerous times. Cherie is not only a successful Burlesque Producer and Performer but also an accomplished actress having appeared in series such as Hollyoaks amongst others. I caught up with Cherie to chat Dita von Teese, Playboy, Red Lipstick and Live Theatre....

What’s your biggest ambition in life?

I would love to perform in Paris. I have been there quite a few times visiting, for holidays and once I was flown over for an acting job but I am yet to perform burlesque there. Paris has some of the most stunning venues and it’s the home of the iconic Folie Bergere, Moulin Rouge and Crazy Horse.

Another ambition I had was to meet Dita Von Teese. She has been a big inspiration to me and I was lucky enough to finally meet her recently and watch her perform to an audience of only 100 people. She is the epitome of glamour and class and to see her perform so close was a dream come true. Dita really is the Queen of burlesque. If a performer can afford to see her live, I would say book a ticket to one of her shows in a heart beat, It’s worth every penny.

What’s your top beauty tip?

Always look after your skin, especially your face. It’s the one part of our body that is constantly exposed to all the elements outside. A good moisturiser is key and making sure to have a good routine for removing makeup.

Tell us an interesting fact about you?

My mother was a playboy bunny in the 1980’s when the Playboy brand had a franchise in the UK and a club in Manchester; my Nanna was a singer around the UK under the stage name Jackie Nelson so I guess performing has always been in my blood.

Cherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performer

What do you always carry with you?

A red lipstick, even if I’m not performing I may end up at a meeting or going to an event at the last minute and a red lipstick can instantly transform a day look to evening; perfume as it’s a must have in any hand bag and I like to make sure I have a good book as I’m always travelling to and from various auditions, jobs and shows.

Cherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performerCherie Bebe manchester Burlesque performer

Where do you find your inspiration for your burlesque routines?

Music is my number one inspiration. I think there is a universal connection with music and selecting the right track really can make an act. I have always had a love for films, especially the golden age of Hollywood which was another reason that led me to becoming a burlesque artiste. I also try and see as much live performances as I can when I’m not performing myself. This year I have probably watched more live theatre than anything else and there have been a number of shows that have really been inspiring to watch including Dita Von Teese - The Art Of The Teese, Wise Children, Richard III, All About Eve, The Producers and Ian McKellen On Stage. I feel being authentic and original is key to any burlesque routine. Being a trained actress I was always taught to find the truth in a scene and it’s the same with burlesque, I think you need to have a truthfulness to your performance or any art form for that matter.

You can catch Cherie at her shows at Matt and Phreds and also the Richmond Tea Rooms in Manchester.

You can also find Cherie on social media here: facebook and instagram.

Why do Women Book a Boudoir Photoshoot?

Don't underestimate the power of a photoshoot... it is so much more than just images! Bespoke Boudoir with a vintage edge UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 38Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

Belle Privé (Privée) means The Private Beauty- the brand was initially created for the Everywoman, those of us who rarely get the chance to see the real beauty in ourselves. We get so caught up in life and responsibilities that we seldom get the opportunity to celebrate who we really are.

Boudoir is something I believe every woman should do at least once in their lives. Whilst the thought of it to some seems daunting, let me reassure you that it will be one of the most empowering and liberating experiences of your life!

Most women are reassured that as a female boudoir photographer I understand women, how they see themselves and their bodies and most importantly how they want to be photographed. My work is a long way from the world of ‘glamour’. My work attracts strong, independent women who are keen to have a photoshoot at a significant time in their life. Perhaps you need to reconnect with yourself, celebrate your new body, perhaps you have a milestone event coming up... The confidence and pride after a photoshoot will stay with you for a long time.

Who knew my career choice would be so incredibly rewarding... I worked with countless women who have had to undergo mastectomies and surgeries, women who have never felt pretty for one reason or another, or those with an abusive history and they come to me, not just for beautiful images of themselves but as a form of therapy. They learn to love themselves again. In fact, did you know that post-mastectomy therapy recommends booking a photoshoot?

The images are amazing and you made me feel so empowered and capable of getting back to the woman I am

and maybe the more evolved version too...

I've had clients cry (in a good way), I've cried (in a sympathetic way). I love what I do and the effect it can have on women. Don't underestimate the power of a photoshoot, it is so much more than just images.

Confessions of a Boudoir Photographer

Having seen hundreds of semi naked models, your body is more beautiful than you think...

6Z4A4501 My day to day job involves me seeing lingerie-clad women most days of my working life. It's pretty routine to be honest. People are fascinated with my job... I've lost count of the number of offers to help on a shoot (mostly from men offering to hold the lens cap!) And just for the record, I shoot alone, I retouch myself. No one will ever see your raw images but you.

Most women that come into the studio, be it model or client have body hang ups. 'Sorry about my big bum/saggy boobs/ bingo wings'. Even women with the most jaw droppingly amazing bodies have issues. Let me tell you a secret, real bodies are gorgeous. And I mean real bodies, not the carefully curated and edited images we see on social media.

What most models look like in real life very much differs from what they look like in the published magazine. Make-up, careful lighting, posing and editing all conceal the reality, and create a perfection that no woman should measure herself against.

*whispers* Even beautiful models have cellulite, stretch marks and poor skin sometimes.

So the reality is that your very own body is way better than you think it is. The very thing you are paranoid about, I bet no one even notices. Do you look at pictures of yourself from 10 years ago and think oh, look how great I looked and yet at the time you were paranoid about some perceived 'flaw' you thought you had?

Whilst I'd personally love to look like a Victoria's Secret model, I also realise that I am a 42 year old mother of two so I'm not doing so badly. Whoever you are, from office worker to mother, you look fabulous just as you are!

So book that shoot... I promise to make you look your absolute best without the extreme photoshopping because after all this is a celebration of YOU!

There's more to Photography than pushing a button https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2019/3/theres-more-to-photography-than-pushing-a-button

Behind the Lens

There is more to photography than just pushing a button! It is more than just knowing your way around a camera sd-1sd-1 and understanding your f stops and ISO.

It is knowing the exact moment to press the shutter, that micro expression and adjustment of pose that shows you at your absolute best. It's about understanding how a woman wants to look, how to pose her body to showcase the areas she likes and to minimise those she doesn't. It's about years spent perfecting studio lighting so that it doesn't look like studio lighting. It's about high end retouching that makes you look your absolute best without making you look like the Barbie version of yourself!

There is a business behind the camera too- notably over £12,000 worth of photographic equipment (Burglars take note- the house is alarmed and patrolled by Chief of Security, our utterly ferocious Labrador Daisy who will be intent on showing you her soft toy collection!) And then there is my central Manchester studio and all the associated costs, my make up artist, the insurance, image storage, admin, marketing costs and professional body fees...

Finally and most importantly, my vision as a photographer, training and 10 years of living, breathing and practicing photography at every possible moment!

It may look easy but trust me, it has taken years for me to to get to where I am today.

If you would like images of you looking your absolute best, then do get in touch! You can make a booking here.

The History of Boudoir Photography https://www.belleprive.co.uk/blog/2019/2/the-history-of-boudoir-photography

A Brief History of Boudoir

Well behaved women seldom make history

So firstly what is Boudoir Photography?

The official definition says 'Boudoir photography is a photographic style featuring intimate, romantic and sometimes erotic images of its subjects, primarily intended for the private enjoyment of the subject and her romantic partners' Whilst this is in part true, my clients see things differently... Read to the end to find out why!

Naughty Beginnings

Boudoir hasn't always been popular (or accepted)... Boudoir Photography began in France around 1890. It was highly taboo, illegal and classified as pornography! The first postcard featuring a naked woman was released in France in 1900, but had to be sold under the counter in shops throughout Paris. They immediately became hugely sought after collectors items. Around this time, Pin Up modelling also had its origins in Burlesque - Performers used naked cards to advertise their shows and then left them back stage at venues.

boudoir nudity photographyAlbert Arthur AllenAlbert Arthur Allen- Pioneer of Boudoir Photography in the 20s

By the 1920s, boudoir photography really began to come into its own. During this time it was still illegal for images to contain nudity, but regardless, trailblazers such as French photographer Albert Arthur Allen continued to create images. He focused mostly on fuller figured women, as he believed these were the sexiest bodies. (His prints sell for £1000s today). If a photographer was caught taking or selling images containing nudity however, they were still heavily fined and even in some cases, arrested.

The Rise of the Pin Up

Fast-forward to the 1940s, and suddenly the focus was on Pin Up Girls. Partial nudity became more readily accepted Elvgren Pin UpGil Elvgren Pinup-1971Image credit: Elvgren in part as a backlash to the serious nature of war. These women were beautifully curvy... the hourglass figure was highly desirable and they wore lingerie, stockings and corsets. PinUp girls were used to keep morale up for men during wartime. Elvgren was hugely popular, as were the Vargas Girls, painted as nose art onto planes which were seen as a symbol of good luck. By the 1950s, people realised that sex sells and soon the pin up girls became part of popular culture and were widely used in advertising, although still aimed more at the male viewer. Playboy Magazine was founded in 1953 and had a huge cultural impact, and slowly people began to change their mind on what was previously thought of as pornographic.

Sexual Revolution

The next large change in the evolution of boudoir photography took place in the 1970s, when photography itself became better accepted as an art form. Many magazines began to feature photographs of real women as opposed to drawings, and so boudoir photography became better accepted. The fun and girly PinUp look became less popular as feminism grew and icons such as Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren became the strong, provocative sex symbols of their time. Women began to see sexual liberation as a form of rebellion against the patriarchy and therefore nudity became more widely accepted by both sexes.

Right Now

Over the course of the century, the popularity of Boudoir Photography has grown and grown to the point where virtually every woman I know has had a boudoir shoot at some point in their lives. It has become a symbol of women's sexual freedom, of body acceptance at every level and of empowerment.

My hallmark is elegance and sophistication. My work attracts strong, independent women who are keen to have a photoshoot at a significant time in their life. And whilst boudoir photography was historically something that a woman did for her partner, to be kept private, pretty much all of my clients are doing it for themselves, to celebrate their bodies and let me tell you, the vast majority want the world to see how fabulous they look! Take a look.

What are you waiting for? Book a shoot here.

If it's both terrifying and amazing, then you should definitely pursue it

How to be Camera Ready...

Be camera-ready at a moment's notice with my tricks of the trade... Boudoir Studio ManchesterBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 48Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio

If you want to know how to look good in photos, here is my number one tip: Relax!

And of course, have a good photographer around. At Belle Privé, it is my responsibility to make sure you feel relaxed and comfortable. It’s also my responsibility to pay attention to lighting, posing and composition. But critically, it is my responsibility to capture that exact moment when you are looking your absolute best, that micro expression, that slight adjustment of the pose that shows you at your most gorgeous.

When you see a model on the cover of a magazine, remember that someone has spent a great deal of money and time to create that image- make up artists, hair stylists, assistants, lighting equipment, not to mention the photo-shopping that goes on afterwards. That model is in no way more photogenic than you. Being photogenic has nothing to do with genetics. It is a skill you can master.

So what happens when you don’t have a pro photographer around? In the age of smartphones and social media, there is a camera everywhere and your less-than-flattering image can be broadcast to the internet faster than you can say cheese. I’m often asked how people can look better in images. Here are my tips to be camera-ready at a moment’s notice…

What would you do to improve your skills at anything else? You’d practice! You can- and you should! Yes, it feels vain and maybe a little bit embarrassing to practice in front of a mirror but find out which angles work for you and your body, which is your best side, find your signature smile.

Pose like a Pro

Vintage fashion Photography by UK PhotographerBelle Prive Photography Vintage Portfolio 2Belle Prive Photography Vintage Portfolio Even if you aren’t walking the red carpet, knowing how to pose will come in handy. Understand how to make your body look it’s best.

• Think posture, shoulders back, twist your torso so that one shoulder is turned away from the camera.

Try and stand in the middle of a group shot, not on the outside.

• Think about what to do with your hands- where you touch tends to be where people look. If at a complete loss, hold something (glass of champagne perhaps!)

Work your Face

• The key to a natural expression is to think happy thoughts! Real thoughts of happiness make for a genuine, relaxed Makeover Photoshoot by Belle Prive UKBelle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot 66Belle Prive Boudoir Photoshoot Portfolio smile (rather than an otherwise forced facial expression). Remember to smile with your eyes too.

• A natural smile trumps a fake one every time. But if you really can’t muster up a genuine smile, don’t say cheese! Try saying ‘Money’ or ‘Yoga’ instead.

• A photo shot from just above you is way more flattering than one shot from below.

• Avoid standing directly under a light, which can cast weird shadows on your face. Instead, stand facing a natural light source, such as a window, or in a spot where soft light hits your face from the side.

What (not) to wear

Vintage model portfolio PhotographyBelle Prive Photography Vintage Portfolio 6Belle Prive Photography Vintage Portfolio • Wear a colour that flatters you. Darker colours are more slimming.

• Don’t wear clothes that have crazy patterns, it will distract from your photo. Also make sure your clothes aren’t wrinkled or bunched up- it can add extra weight.

Heels often make your legs look longer and your posture better, even if they aren't in shot.

• Make sure any belts and jewellery are straight. The devil is in the detail.

• Glasses- wear your anti-glare glasses if at all possible.

Make-up Considerations

• If you know you are going to be photographed, add a touch more make-up than usual. Emphasize your favourite feature.

• Don’t forget your nails as they are often in shot.

• Make sure your foundation is a perfect match to your skin. Go easy with any sparkle or shimmer. (Flash photography especially can be a little harsh and any sparkle can reflect back to the camera making you look a little ghostly)

And Breathe…

The best portrait is when someone is relaxed and happy. Remember to breathe. The more your natural personality comes through, the better the results.

Now you know the tricks of the trade, you can be photo-ready at every opportunity!

Remember: You are BEAUTIFUL
